Asphalt Coatings Company Builds Concrete Garage Entry Lanes at the Kiewit Campus in Lone Tree, Colorado

A parking garage entry funnels every car on an office campus through a few narrow lanes and gates. Rebuilding those lanes while the garage stays open takes careful phasing. On the Kiewit campus at Trainstation Circle in Lone Tree, Asphalt Coatings Company rebuilt the entry and gate lanes of the parking garage over about six weeks, with the garage open around the work.

Entry Pads and Aprons

Asphalt Coatings Company started the Kiewit project with concrete pads and aprons at the garage entry. The first concrete went in over four days.

Steps at the Entry

  • Mark: orange paint marked the areas to be replaced beside the curb islands.
  • Reinforce: once the old surface was out, the crew tied a rebar mat over the prepared base.
  • Cure: fresh concrete was covered with plastic to cure.
  • Tie in: the next day the new apron met freshly coated black asphalt at the entry.

Reinforcing with a rebar mat and curing under plastic are standard steps for concrete that will carry daily vehicle traffic.

Rebuilding the Gate Lanes

Asphalt Coatings Company rebuilt the lanes that run past the Kiewit garage gates about a week after the entry work.

  • Saw-cut: a walk-behind saw cut the asphalt near the gate kiosks.
  • Break out: a skid steer broke up the old asphalt and cleared each lane to the base.
  • Form: wood forms staked out the new island and the lane edges along the garage.
  • Pour: new concrete lanes then replaced the asphalt between the forms.

Replacing asphalt with concrete in the gate lanes gives the busiest part of the entry a rigid surface where cars stop, start and turn at the kiosks.

New Concrete Islands

Asphalt Coatings Company formed and poured new concrete islands at the Kiewit garage entry. Wood forms set the shape of the island along with the lane edges, so the islands and lanes were built as one layout.

Curb Paint and Markings

Asphalt Coatings Company painted curbs and lane markings at the Kiewit garage. Yellow paint now outlines the new islands and the edges of the gate lanes. White arrows and lane lines guide drivers in and out, and a crosswalk crosses the entry in front of the new island.

Phasing Work Around an Open Garage

Asphalt Coatings Company phases concrete work so facilities stay in use. At Kiewit, the entry pads came first and the gate lanes followed about a week later, all over roughly six weeks with the garage open around it. That kind of sequencing lets employees keep parking while the entry is rebuilt.
